天然胶乳是一种黏稠的乳白色液体，外观像牛奶，它是橡胶粒子在近中性介质中的乳状水分散体，在空气中由于氧和微生物的作用，胶乳酸度增加，2—12h即能自然凝固，为防止自然凝固，需加入一定量的氨溶液作为保护剂。天然胶乳属于橡胶类的热塑性合成树脂，其特点是高弹性、粘接时成膜性能良好、胶膜富于柔韧性，因而使胶膜具有优异的耐屈挠性、抗震性和耐蠕变性能，适用于动态下部件的粘接和不同热膨胀系数材料之间的粘接。
天然橡胶（NR）是一种以顺-1，4-聚异戊二烯为主要成分的天然高分子化合物，其成分中91%～94%是橡胶烃（顺-1，4-聚异戊二烯），其余为蛋白质、脂肪酸、灰分、糖类等非橡胶物质。天然橡胶是应用最广的通用橡胶。
